A centipede's body is elongated and made up of segments. Each segment has one pair of legs attached to it. The head region is distinct, but the rest of the body is fairly uniform throughout its length, except for the hind end which differs slightly. Most centipedes are only about two inches (five centimeters) long, but their lengths vary from less than a quarter of an inch to over 12 inches (30 centimeters) long. Some centipedes have less than 15 pairs of legs, others like the Himantarum gabrielis of Southern Europe has 171 pairs of legs.
