ALS ice bucket challenge have been popular recently in social medias. Those doing the challenge are seen dumping a bucket filled with water and ice into themselves. Even celebrities and famous people are seen doing the challenge now. You might have even been nominated or already have done the challenge. But what is it really? What is ALS? And what is it for?

What Is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease is a neurodegenerative disease. This is the most common disease out of the five motor neuron disease. A patient with ALS can have muscle spasticity, muscle atrophy which decreases the muscle's mass and causes to make the patient progresively become weaker & weaker, difficulty in speaking, breathing and swallowing.

Ice Bucket Challenge

The ice bucket challenge is an activity to promote awarenes of the ALS disease. The challenge is also a way to encourage people to donate for research. The good thing is that it became viral in social medias that you can see almost everyone doing it. Just like any other trending activities you will see comments from opposing people. Saying that you should just donate instead of pouring a bucket of ice into your head. Well, you can't really blame them because some of these people doesn't even know what is the challenge actually for. What they just know is that it is a popular thing to do now so they just do it.

Famous People On The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The ice bucket challenge became so trending that the big shots are accepting the challenge now. From Mark Zuckerberg which was nominated to do the challenge by a Governor

and  to Bill Gates which was nominated by Mark Zuckerberg.

Barack Obama was cheered to also do the ALS ice bucket challenge but refuses and donated instead. On the other hand Goerge W Bush have accepted the challenge. Other than that there are already a long list of celebrities and famous people that have already accepted the challenge to be included in this article.

These famous people have accepted the ALS ice bucket challenge and must have also made donations. Of course we can't exactly be sure that they have indeed made donations but with Bill Gates I think we are all pretty sure that he would have donated giving his reputation of being a philanthropist backed by a history of a lot of donations done.

So if you are nominated and is going to accept the ice bucket challenge be reminded that this activity is to be done to spread awareness of the ALS and to encourage people to donate. Not just because your friends are doing this and you perceive that this is a famous thing to do. Better if you can donate and just do the challenge without waiting to be nominated. Then nominate your friends, families and collegues.
